How Much Do You Tip a Charter Captain in the Hamptons?

It is the question people whisper at the dock: are we supposed to tip, and how much? Here is the straight answer. The industry norm for tipping a charter captain is 15 to 20 percent of the charter fee. That range holds across the Hamptons and most of the charter world.

Nobody publishes this on their booking page, which is why so many groups end the day guessing. Let's fix that.

Where the 15 to 20 percent lands

Think of it like tipping at a restaurant, scaled to the day. A captain on a private charter is your driver, guide, safety officer, swim-stop scout, and sometimes your photographer. The tip covers all of it.

15 percent says the day went well. 20 percent says the captain made the day. Went past 20? That happens when a captain saves a rough plan, wrangles a big group, or turns a proposal into a perfect moment.

When to adjust

A few honest adjustments people make:

Longer trips lean higher. An 8-hour full-day charter takes more setup, more route planning, and more work than a short cruise, so groups often land near 20 percent.

Big moments lean higher. If the captain helped plan a proposal or kept a bachelorette group happy for four hours, that effort shows up in the tip.

Problems are not tip problems. If something went wrong with the trip itself, raise it with the company. Do not settle it through the tip. Those are separate conversations.

How to hand it over

Cash at the dock is the classic move, handed to the captain at the end of the day. If your group is splitting it, sort that out on the ride back so nobody is doing math on the dock. Not sure what your booking includes? Ask when you book. It is a normal question, and any honest operator will answer it plainly.

Is the tip ever included?

Read your booking confirmation. Some operators fold a service charge into event packages, and you should never tip twice without meaning to. If nothing about gratuity appears in your quote, assume it is not included and plan for the 15 to 20 percent range. When in doubt, ask before the trip, not after.
