You can see water from almost anywhere in Southold. Getting out on it is the harder part. Most of the shoreline is private, the town landings fill up early, and a trailer is a whole project of its own. A Southold charter solves all of that in one phone call. We run captained trips out of Shelter Island, and we pick up in Greenport, a short drive east on Route 25. You park once. We handle the boat, the fuel, the route and the gear. How a Southold charter actually works
There is no dock of ours in Southold, and we will not pretend otherwise. What we offer instead is simpler. You drive to Greenport, which is the North Fork’s main harbor village and our regular pickup point. From most addresses in Southold that is a short hop east on Main Road. You meet the boat at the waterfront, step aboard, and you are on Peconic Bay within minutes.
Our home dock is at 63 S Menantic Rd, Shelter Island, NY 11964. We also pick up at Sag Harbor if part of your group is coming from the South Fork. Plenty of Southold trips end up mixed that way, with half the group driving out from the North Fork and half crossing from the south.

What the water off Southold looks like
Southold sits on a narrow neck of land with very different water on each side. To the north is Long Island Sound, open and exposed. To the south is Peconic Bay, protected and calm. Our charters work the bay side, which is why the ride stays comfortable even when the Sound is rough.
Southold Bay opens out past Paradise Point toward Shelter Island. From the water you get a view of the shoreline that you simply cannot get from Route 25. Working oyster gear. Bay houses. Long stretches of low beach with nobody on them.
Southold is one of the oldest English settlements in New York, founded in 1640. That history is still visible from the water, especially in the old landings and creek mouths that were working harbors long before they were scenic. Horton Point Lighthouse, built in 1857 and set on a bluff about 60 feet above the Sound, sits on the north shore. It is a landmark worth seeing, though you will see it from land, not from a bay charter.

Sunset cruises. The bay faces west and southwest from here, which is the whole reason sunset trips out of Greenport work so well. We push off roughly 90 minutes before sunset and let the light do the work.

Fishing. Peconic Bay holds fluke, porgies, bluefish and black sea bass through the summer. Our inshore fishing charters stay in protected water, which suits first-time anglers and mixed groups.

Dock and dine. We run you to a waterfront restaurant, you eat, we bring you home. Slips at East End restaurants are first come, first served, so we plan the timing around that rather than promising a table.

Family days. Anchoring and swimming in the back creeks is the most requested trip we run, and the calm water is the reason.
What to know before you book
Group size is set by federal rule, not by us. Under the USCG six-passenger rule for uninspected vessels under 100 gross tons, we carry up to six passengers plus crew. If your group is larger, call and we will talk through options.
Children under 12 must wear a USCG-approved life jacket on vessels 65 feet or under while the boat is underway, under New York Navigation Law. There is an exception for children inside an enclosed cabin. We carry approved life jackets for everyone aboard.
Bring your own food and drinks. A cooler is welcome. Pack towels, sunscreen and soft-soled shoes.

Captained charter or rent the boat yourself
Southold is where this choice gets made most often, because the biggest self-drive rental operation on the North Fork is headquartered here on Main Road. It is worth understanding what the two options actually require of you.
A self-drive rental on the East End generally means you must be 21 or older. You need prior experience operating a boat. You will also be asked for a substantial credit card security deposit before you leave the dock. You are responsible for the route, the depth, the weather call and the docking. On Peconic Bay that last one matters more than people expect, because transient slips are first come, first served and the wind sets hard across most of them.
A captained Southold charter removes all of it. No deposit conversation. No experience requirement. No one in your group loses the afternoon to driving the boat instead of enjoying it.
The other difference is range. Self-drive rentals out here are typically restricted to a defined operating area, commonly as far west as Robins Island and as far east as Gardiners Bay. Our captained trips are not boxed in that way. From Shelter Island we run the full bay, and longer charters reach Fishers Island and Block Island.
